A Riemann Problem for the Isentropic Gas Dynamics Equations
We study a Riemann problem for the two-dimensional isentropic gas dynamics equations which models transonic regular reflection. When written in self-similar coordinates, the system changes type from hyperbolic to mixed hyperbolic-elliptic. Using the theory of one-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws, we formulate a free boundary problem in the subsonic region and we outline the main ideas f...
Global Wave Interactions in Isentropic Gas Dynamics
We give a complete description of nonlinear waves and their pairwise interactions in isentropic gas dynamics. Our analysis includes rarefactions, compressions and shock waves. Because the waves are arbitrarily large, we describe the change of states across the wave exactly, without resolving the characteristic patterns. We similarly describe the states between nonlinear waves in any pairwise in...
Solution with Nite Energy to a Bgk System Relaxing to Isentropic Gas Dynamics
We consider a vector kinetic BGK equation leading to isentropic gas dynamics in the relaxation limit. We prove the existence of a weak solution satisfying a kinetic entropy inequality for any initial data with nite energy.
On the shock wave spectrum for isentropic gas dynamics with capillarity
We consider the stability problem for shock layers in Slemrod’s model of an isentropic gas with capillarity. We show that these traveling waves are monotone in the weak capillarity case, and become highly oscillatory as the capillarity strength increases. Using a spectral energy estimate we prove that small-amplitude monotone shocks are spectrally stable. We also show, through the use of a nove...
